Wonder Woman will be named Honorary UN Ambassador this month

Wonder Woman, already a major feminist icon in pop culture, is being given a new role to inspire women in the real world. The United Nations announced today that the character will be made Honorary UN Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls.

The superhero, otherwise known as Princess Diana of Themiscyra, is set to be given the title on October 21st at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will be in attendance, along with DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson and “surprise guests.” (Don’t be surprised if Gal Gadot and Lynda Carter make appearances.)

The UN is honoring Wonder Woman as a way to both celebrate her 75th anniversary, and to promote gender equality worldwide. Empowering women and girls is the fifth goal of its 17 goals to transform the world with sustainable development, and it entails ending violence and discrimination, providing access to education and leadership opportunities, ensuring reproductive rights, and strengthening current legislation on women’s behalf.

As one of the oldest and easily the most recognizable female superheroes on the planet, Wonder Woman is unique as a symbol for women. And with a solo film due out next year, Diana is certainly (and finally) enjoying a moment when she’s just as relevant and important as her male counterparts.
